"Avoidable"

We sat across from each other at the table. A small cafe in the middle of the city, not a lot of people knew about it. I knew the owner. They were nice.

The brown walls and warm colors reminded me of the fireplace during winter. A place you can feel comfortable.

Drinks lay on the table in front of us. Fresh coffee. We sat in silence as we watched the steam rise from those beige cups, up towards the ceiling.

The faces around me looked blank. Minds racing from one thing to the next. Worrying about being late to one thing or another. It's not like I was any better.

Every time I thought to say something, I stopped myself. Something about the tranquility of the setting made me pause. How it all felt so calm. Like I could live like this forever.

But I should have said something to you. I wish I did. But I never got the chance. I woke up startled, gasping for air. Screaming your name. Weeping for someone I've never known.
